Headline: The install of GDR R2 did not fix any of the usability concerns I’m having.
These are just my installation notes for GDR R2 (See the previous post for more about GDR)…
At the outset, the install was confusing. The notes on the website said this:
- Install Microsoft® Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition SP1 (English) or Microsoft® Visual Studio Team System 2008 Suite SP1 (English)
- Uninstall the Database Edition Power Tools if installed. To uninstall the Power Tools from the command line, use: msiexec /X {EA016DAB-E08A-46FB-BBF0-ED6EB8FD4671}
- Uninstall any previous version of the GDR for Database Edition. To uninstall a previous version of the GDR from the command line, use: msiexec /X {DDF197C6-4507-3A19-A4B5-0E17CC931370}
- Install Microsoft® Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1
- Install Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition GDR by running the self-extracting executable SETUP.EXE.
While the notes in the ReadMe.mht file said this:

Note that what’s step 2 in the ReadMe is step 4 on the website. I how the ReadMe was correct… that’ what I’m doing.
OK… After 20 minutes, the uninstall of the previous GDR is STILL running (or is hung). I can’t believe it would take that long…
OK… I gave up and rebooted… Now it’s going much faster. It only took about a minute this time… Much better. Now for step 5. That install seemed to go fine.
Just checked… The defaults are still ridiculous… A tool that used to be very valuable is now merely a source of frustration.
